Payment solutions for hobby shops

How each solution supports hobby shops

See what each option adds to the way your business takes and tracks payments.

Square for Retail

For hobby shops: Connect toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders to a retail catalog, stock tracking and customer purchase history. Square describes Square for Retail as a POS to "sell more and stay stocked with a POS designed for retail." For hobby shops, that means kits, parts and supplies tracked in one catalog with stock synced between the counter and online. Roots Payments, an independent Square Reseller, builds the catalog, configures the plan and hardware, and supports your team after launch.
  • Import and clean up your catalog of kits, parts and supplies
  • Map your workflow to Square Free, Plus or Premium before you commit
  • Configure barcode labels, scanners, printers and cash drawers

Square Inventory

For hobby shops: Track toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders with item-level stock records and replenishment workflows. Hobby shops carry kits, parts and supplies, and small counting errors turn into lost sales or dead stock. Square's inventory tools track stock in real time, print barcode labels and report COGS, sell-through and aging stock. Roots Payments builds the item structure and counting routine so the numbers stay right.
  • Design variants and SKUs so reports roll up correctly
  • Set up vendors, reorder points and purchase orders
  • Label existing stock and run the first full count with you

Square Hardware Setup

For hobby shops: Choose and configure Square checkout equipment for toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders, including counter, mobile and staff workflows. Square offers Register, Terminal, Handheld, Stand and contactless readers, plus a Register Retail Kit with printers, scanners and a cash drawer. Most shops start with Square Register or Stand at the counter plus a barcode scanner and receipt printer, and add Handheld for the floor. Roots Payments recommends the setup, installs it and tests every device.
  • Recommend devices for your counter, floor and events
  • Install, pair and test printers, scanners and drawers
  • Set up label printers for barcodes

Square Online (websites)

For hobby shops: Give customers an online storefront for toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders, with ordering and fulfillment choices suited to your business. Square Online gives hobby shops a website with pickup, shipping and local delivery, and Square says in-store sales, online orders and inventory connect automatically. That keeps kits, parts and supplies from overselling across channels. Roots Payments builds the store, product pages and shipping rules.
  • Build product pages with photos, variants and descriptions
  • Set shipping zones, pickup windows and local delivery radius
  • Connect your domain and basic on-page SEO

Square Loyalty

For hobby shops: Create a rewards program around toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders, with earning rules tied to how customers shop. Square Loyalty rewards customers by visit, spend or item, and Square says it helps you "reward returning customers and encourage future visits." A spend-based reward, such as $10 off after $200, works well for shops with repeat buyers. Roots Payments designs the reward rules and sets up enrollment at checkout.
  • Design reward tiers that protect your margin
  • Set up enrollment prompts at checkout
  • Link loyalty to marketing campaigns

For hobby shops: Build opt-in campaigns for toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders, from new offerings to reminders for returning customers. Square Marketing sends email and text campaigns from the same customer list your POS builds. Square Integrations

For hobby shops: Connect Square transaction data with the tools used to manage collectible inventory, preorders and hobby stock, reducing repeated data entry. Square's App Marketplace connects the POS to accounting, ecommerce and other tools. Accounting sync is the most common; ecommerce sync matters if you also sell on another platform. Roots Payments picks the apps, connects them and checks that data lands correctly.
  • Recommend apps from Square's App Marketplace
  • Connect and map accounts, taxes and categories
  • Test sync with real sales

Merchant Account

For hobby shops: Arrange a processing account for toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders, with checkout methods matched to how customers pay. A dedicated merchant account gives hobby shops their own processing relationship, with interchange-plus or flat pricing and statements we explain line by line. Many small shops start on flat-rate pricing. Roots Payments reviews your statements and quotes before you switch.
  • Review your current statements for hidden fees
  • Quote pricing based on your card mix
  • Set up terminals or connect your POS

Cash Discount Program

For hobby shops: Design a clearly presented cash-price program for toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders, with checkout wording and receipts aligned. A cash discount program shows a card price and a lower cash price so customers who pay cash save. Shops with thin margins and lots of card sales see the biggest savings. Roots Payments sets up compliant signage, receipts and pricing.
  • Check your state's rules first
  • Set up pricing, signage and receipts
  • Train staff to explain it

Credit Card Surcharging

For hobby shops: Plan credit-card surcharge disclosures for toys, hobby supplies and collectible orders, keeping eligible card payments distinct at checkout. Surcharging adds a fee to credit card payments to offset processing costs. It's banned on debit cards, capped by card-brand rules and restricted in some states. It can offset fees on large tickets, but some customers dislike it, so we compare it with a cash discount first. Roots Payments sets it up to the rules or tells you when it's not a fit.
  • Check your state's surcharge rules
  • Register the program with the card brands where required
  • Set up signage and receipt disclosures
